We were excited to host the team from NBC Chicago today at the HQ! They came by to talk about the custom Humboldt GMTs we recently made for the men’s curling team as they head to Italy to compete on the global stage!

Have you ever wondered about the relationship between curling and timekeeping? As U.S. Men’s Curling Team member Aidan Oldenburg put it in a recent interview, “Timing is extremely important in curling. We have stopwatches on our waists to track how the ice changes, there are time clocks tracking our pace of play, and the games are almost three hours long, so being aware of the time itself is also important to make sure we are fueling ourselves during the game.” In short, timing is crucial! So it makes sense that we partnered with the U.S. Men’s Olympic Curling Team to make sure they had robust timekeepers on the wrists during this year’s games in Italy.
Writing for Crown & Caliber, Kathleen McGivney explores the importance of timekeeping in curling and Oak & Oscar’s relationship with the men’s team. The article covers everything from the watch we made for team coach Phill Drobnick in 2017 to the Team Shuster Humbolder 12-HR watches that feature a real piece of curling stone in the caseback to the custom Humboldt GMTs we made this year for Team Casper.

It’s always meaningful to see how others experience what we build. Recently, Time and Tide Watches spent time with the Atwood and shared their take; offering a fresh perspective on the details that define it.
From the outset, they recognized the intention behind the watch, noting that “Oak & Oscar has built a reputation for thoughtful, purpose-driven watches.” That idea continues with the Atwood, where every element is designed with clarity and purpose.
Their review highlights the balance we aimed to achieve. As they put it, the Atwood is “a versatile piece that doesn’t try too hard, yet delivers where it counts.” It’s a watch built to integrate into daily life; refined, but never overworked.
They also called attention to the dial, emphasizing that “legibility is a clear priority here.” That focus on clarity, paired with subtle depth and detail, is central to how the watch comes to life on the wrist.
Just as important, they noted the restraint in the overall design, describing the Atwood as a watch that “focuses on doing the fundamentals well.” For us, that’s what it’s all about, getting the essentials right and letting the watch speak for itself.

Recently, the team at Time+Tide put the Oak & Oscar Atwood under the microscope, and we’re honored by what they had to say.
In their video review (link here), Time+Tide describes the Atwood as “one of the most convincing modern takes on an American sports chronograph we’ve seen in a long time.” That’s high praise from a publication that sees more than its fair share of chronographs.
What stood out most to the reviewers wasn’t any single feature, but rather how all the details work together. The 39mm case, fully brushed finishing, drilled lugs, and vintage-inspired proportions create a watch that feels familiar without feeling derivative. As they put it, the Atwood manages to avoid becoming “another tribute act dressed up in faux nostalgia.”
The review also highlighted one of our favorite aspects of the Atwood: the dial. The layered sandwich construction creates depth and legibility, while the signature orange accents add a touch of personality and energy. Time+Tide noted that these small details communicate something we care deeply about at Oak & Oscar: thoughtful design matters.
Of course, no discussion of the Atwood would be complete without mentioning the movement. Inside is the manually wound AMT5100M column-wheel flyback chronograph. Rather than taking the easier path with a standard automatic movement, we chose a movement that delivers a more engaging experience every time the chronograph is used. Time+Tide called out the tactile feel of the pushers, the flyback functionality, and the overall quality of the movement as highlights of the watch.
Perhaps our favorite observation came near the end of the review when they described the Atwood as a watch that “quietly gets the details right.”
That’s exactly what we set out to build.

Chicago, Humboldt GMT, worn & wound

Windup Chicago feels a little different for us. It’s our hometown show, which means we get to spend the weekend catching up with longtime Owners, meeting new ones, and sharing what we’ve been working on. This year, we wanted to bring something special that could only be found in Chicago.
The result was the Humboldt GMT 2026 Chicago Edition.
Limited to just five pieces, this special edition paired everything we love about the Humboldt GMT with a couple of details created exclusively for Windup Chicago. A black PVD bezel insert gives the watch a slightly more understated, tool-watch feel, while the custom Chicago-themed caseback engraving serves as a quiet tribute to the city we’ve proudly called home since Oak & Oscar began.
Everything else remains exactly as it should. The Swiss-made Sellita SW330 automatic GMT movement, anti-shock and anti-magnetic protection, 20ATM of water resistance, a brushed 40mm stainless steel case, bi-directional bezel, and our fully articulated bracelet with a quick-adjust clasp all make it a watch that’s equally comfortable traveling across time zones or heading off on its next adventure.
The five Chicago Editions found five new Owners in about ten minutes, which honestly caught us by surprise.
But if we’re being honest, selling out wasn’t what made this release feel successful.
Success was seeing people stop in their tracks when they spotted the black bezel. It was hearing someone notice the Chicago engraving on the caseback and smile. It was watching conversations start around the table and seeing how many people connected with the idea of creating something that celebrated our hometown in a subtle, thoughtful way.
The watches may have found new wrists in the first few minutes of the show, but seeing how enthusiastically they were received all weekend is what we’ll remember most.
The best part of Windup has never been selling watches. It’s seeing familiar faces, introducing ourselves to people discovering Oak & Oscar for the first time, hearing stories about watches that have traveled the world, and spending a few days surrounded by people who appreciate mechanical watches as much as we do. The Chicago Edition simply became another reason for those conversations to happen.
To everyone who stopped by our booth this weekend, thank you. Whether you picked up one of the five Chicago Editions, tried on a watch for the first time, or simply stopped to say hello, we’re grateful you spent a little time with us.

Earlier today, our friends at Fratello gave us an unexpected little trip down memory lane.
On the latest episode of Fratello On Air, Mike and Balazs were talking about “the watches that got away” — watches they once owned, sold, and maybe wish they still had. One of those was Balazs’s Nivada Grenchen Datomaster.
That brought up a memory we hadn’t thought about in a while.
Years ago, Balazs, Mike, and I all happened to own Nivada Grenchen Datomasters at the same time. Naturally, when we found ourselves together in Basel, during the old school Baselworld fair, we did what any group of watch nerds would do: we put all three together and took a photo. It was officially the largest gathering of Datomasters in the world. Probably.
It’s a small story, but hearing them talk about it again reminded me of one of my favorite things about this industry.
Long before Oak & Oscar had made many of the watches we’re known for today, I was simply a guy who loved watches. I loved discovering them, learning about them, hunting them down and, most importantly, meeting other people who were just as excited about them as I was.
A lot has changed since that photo was taken. Oak & Oscar has grown, we’ve made a lot more watches, and thankfully we’ve still had a few reasons to get together with Mike, Balazs and the Fratello crew over the years.
But the fun part really hasn’t changed all that much.
We still love watches. We still love the stories behind them. And we still really love the people they bring together.
Thanks to Mike and Balazs for the shoutout — and for reminding us of a pretty great one that got away.
